These are the maximum fares or rate a taxi driver may charge. You have the option to ask for a flat rate on longer trips. If you and the driver agree to this, then the driver must still run the meter. You are to be charged the lower amount.

Taxi Fare or Rate Calculation
These amounts are displayed on a meter, mounted to the dash of the taxi or cab. The rates are set and meters sealed much like a gas station pump. A combination of time, distance, and a start or flag drop charge will determine your fare. Since meters run in increments, keep this in mind. Do not be alarmed if the meter runs at a light or while waiting. The meters also run on time.
Taxi Rate or Fare Negotiation
You can always negotiate a better taxi rate. However, do this haggling over the phone with the company or shop around for the better flat rate. Keep in mind though, if you save a few bucks with another company, there is a sacrifice in quality most of the time. Newer and smaller companies may be less reliable. Very deep discounts indicate a level of desparation and you may expect an older car or a taxi-shuttle hybrid and have to make other stops. Settle for the best overall value and reliability. Fleet size is one of the greatest indicators of reliability. If everyone else is using the largest taxi service in town, they can only grow on repeat business.
The Taxicab Flat Rate
A negotiated or set rate is a flat rate. It typically discounts up to 20% off the meter rate. You must inform the driver up front or confirm with him right away. The driver will still run the taxi meter and charge you the lower rate.
